i live in brooklyn and the building is 2 bedrooms above a store. I recently went on social security disability. I have had no lease since july 07, because owners of the building have changed. Today I recieved a thirty day notice of a 16 percent (135.00) increase. My question is can this be done? I am on a fixed income now and having been living here for 7 years. I never had an increase more than 5 percent.

Optional Information:
brooklyn, New York

I afraid that with no lease, there is no statutory limit regarding how much a landlord may charge. In other words, the increase in rent is allowable. There is nothing that precludes it.

I had a lease until july 2007, but It was with the old landlord. Also I know in NY that with certain percentages there is a one, two and three year lease how do I know what is my entitlement?
